Discontinuation of Amazon-linux-extra Command in Latest Amazon Linux 2023 Release
This is a short notice and my recent experience with the newly released AL2023.
As a developer who relies on Amazon Linux for my development environment builds, I recently faced an unexpected issue with the AL2023 release. After attempting to use the base image of amazonlinux:latest or amazonlinux, I received logging errors indicating that the amazon-linux-extra command was not found.
The issue led me to spend two hours debugging, trying to enable the extra package and updating and re-installing the amazon-linux-extra epel repository. Unfortunately, these attempts were unsuccessful as the latest release now supports the dnf package manager like CentOS.
In search of a solution, I decided to downgrade the Amazon Linux version to the prior release, and to my delight, it worked!
It’s important for the community to be informed of the discontinuation of Amazon-Linux-Extra commands in the latest release of Amazon Linux. As developers, we rely on these commands to perform crucial tasks in our development environments. It’s crucial to stay up-to-date with the latest changes and seek alternative approaches or suitable replacements when necessary.
As a result of my experience, I have learned to remain mindful of changes to my development environment and take appropriate measures to address any resulting issues.
